ANATOMICAL PLANES
In this , we are going to see about Anatomical planes of the body.
ANATOMICAL PLANES
In human body , there are 3 fundamental planes of body. These are
- Midsagittal plane
- Sagittal plane
- Coronal plane
- Transverse plane
1. Midsagittal plane
- Also known as Median longitudinal plane.
- Passes longitudinally through the sagittal suture (midline).
- Divides the body into equal right and left halves.
- These halves are generally symmetrical in structure, the same symmetry does not apply to all internal structures.
2. Sagittal plane
- Also konwn as Parasagittal plane.
- Any longitudinal plane which passes parallel to the midsagittal plane.
- Divides the body into unequal right and left halves.
3. Coronal plane
- Also known as Frontal plane.
- Passes longitudinally at right angles to the median plane.
- Divides the body into anterior and posterior portions.
- Corresponds to the coronal suture, hence termed the coronal plane.
4. Transverse plane
- Also known as Horizontal plane.
- Passes parallel to the horizon at a right angle to the long axis of the body.
- Dividing the body at any level into superior/upper and inferior/lower portions.
- Perpendicular to the median plane.
