TERMINOLOGY OF BONY FEATURES

Image
TERMS USED TO DESCRIBE BONY FEATURES Depression and Opening 1. Foramen : A hole, which provides passage to blood vessels and nerves. For example, foramina in the transverse process of cervical vertebrae. 2. Fossa : A hollow depression. For example, glenoid fossa of the scapula. 3. Groove : A ditch-like groove containing a tendon or blood vessel. For example, the bicipital groove of the humerus. 4. Meatus : A canal or tube-like opening in a bone. For example, external auditory meatus. 5. Sinus : An air filled cavity within a bone. For example, paranasal air sinuses (i.e. cavities in the paranasal bones filled with air). 6. Facet : A smooth, flat or shallow area. For example, articular facets of ribs. Projections or Processes 1. Condyle : Rounded knuckle-like projection, for example, condyles of the femur. 2. Eminence : Projecting a prominent part of a bone, for example, the intercondylar eminence of the tibia. 3. Head : Rounded articular projection beyond a narrow neck-lik...

TERMINOLOGY OF JOINT MOVEMENTS

Image
TERMS USED TO DESCRIBE JOINT MOVEMENTS: The movements of the body occur at various joints. These movements are described in relation to the axis and the plane, which are perpendicular to each other. They are described in the following terms: 1. FLEXION : Movement that takes place in sagittal plane around a transverse axis . For example, the flexion of the elbow approximates the anterior surface of the forearm with the anterior surface of the arm. The flexion is usually an anterior movement but occasionally it is a posterior movement. For example, flexion of the knee joint . 2. EXTENSION : Movement that approximates the extensor surfaces of the adjoining parts and thus increases the angle of the joint. For example, (i) Extension of elbow approximates the extensor surface of the forearm with the  extensor surface of the arm. (ii) Extension of knee approximates the extensor surface of the leg with the  extensor surface of the thigh. 3. ABDUCTION : Movement of a limb away from...

ANATOMICAL TERMS Terms used to describe the relationship between body parts and/ or structures relative to each other 1. Anterior : Towards the front aspect of the body.                                                              2. Posterior : Towards the back aspect of the body. 3. Superior : Towards the head. 4. Inferior : Towards the feet. 5. Central / Distal   : Towards the centre of the mass of the body. 6. Peripheral / Proximal : Away from the centre of the mass of the body. 7. Median : Along the midsagittal (median) plane. 8. Medial : Towards the median plane. 9. Lateral : Away from the median plane. 10. Intermediate : Between medial and lateral. ANATOMICAL PLANES

Image
In this , we are going to see about Anatomical planes of the body. ANATOMICAL PLANES In human body , there are 3 fundamental planes of body. These are  Midsagittal plane Sagittal plane  Coronal plane  Transverse plane 1. Midsagittal plane Also known as Median longitudinal plane. Passes longitudinally through the sagittal suture (midline). Divides the body into equal right and left halves. These halves are generally symmetrical in structure, the same symmetry does not apply to all internal structures. 2.  Sagittal plane Also konwn as Parasagittal plane. Any longitudinal plane which passes parallel to the midsagittal plane. Divides the body into unequal right and left halves. 3. Coronal plane Also known as Frontal plane. Passes longitudinally at right angles to the median plane. Divides the body into anterior and posterior portions. Corresponds to the coronal suture, hence termed the coronal plane. 4. Transverse plane Also known as Horizontal plane. Passes parall...

POSITIONS OF THE BODY

Image
In this topic we are going to see                 Anatomical Position,                Fundamental Position and                 Other positions of the body. Now we start our first topic , ANATOMICAL POSITION:                     Reference Position of the body      Standing erect.  Eyes looking forward at horizon. Upper limbs hanging by the side of the body.  Palm facing forward. Lower limbs positioned straight with feet approximated together and flat on the floor.  Toes pointing forwards. FUNDAMENTAL POSITION: Same as the anatomical position except that the palms of the hand face the sides of the body. Often used in the rotation of the upper limbs such as Pronation and Supination. OTHER POSITIONS OF THE BODY : Some frequently used terms in clinical practice referrin...
